    Welker Farms

We've entered the hailed wheat acres 😬. Leg Arms modifies a new water pump to fit the 4520 in hopes that it will stay cool when unloading trucks. Dad shares some history as to how our fields came to be!

Haven't you some background into flying, Nick? Why not use "the bright colored ribbon on a string" thingies that are common practise in aviation to mark out covers you have to not forget? In this Case (pun intended) you can more often use magnets also to hold the string. And when "someone" are driving away they can admire all flapping ribbons in their rearview mirrors! ;D

Maand geleden

You can be happy Robert to not have old ancient settlements with burial mounds everywhere on small heights and ridges as here i Sweden. In older times farmers used to "fill up" with more rocks on them but it's not allowed to do anywhere nowadays, even if you know it's "new" made by your older generations. We can't transport it away our "own" piles without archaeological control/survey. But we use Coop/Machine Ring crushers to get rid of our gathered field stones and get very well maintained farm roads. Mostly using the effective hydraulic Finnish wide V-form harrow ripper/auger type with sieve and great loading capacity "stone-pickers". Still is a job for a young kid to do! You don't even have to drive straight, but a lot! Our whole country are rising about 2-10mm/year since the last polar iceage 10k years ago and frost heaving from 1- 1,5 meter annual lifts a Lot of stones placed there by the glazier rivers. Never ending job! ;D

I never got paid. I asked to get paid once and my Dad told me that a roof over our heads and pants and shoes and groceries for a growing boy and propane and fuel etc. were not cheap and working was my contributition to the family. I quit farming hay sold the farm and bought a 5 acre home because you couldn't find any help unless you're growing hemp or weed and pay $25 per hour and your not going to find a kid willing to buck hay unless it's in a farming game.

Wait, people got paid to pick up rocks? We understood it was mandatory to keep a roof over our heads. Had a couple of 80 acres pieces that produced more rocks than crops for years. 20 yrs later, we only have to check them every couple of years for stragglers now!

Keep your eyes on that non clean burning. I’ve had that lead to a bit more engine heat than I like. Also over time fans wear and have been known to loose their blade pitch resulting in less air flow through the radiator. Alternative to using muratic acid is to use phosphoric acid as it will dissolve the hard water and convert the rust without eating away at the metals. Add a bit of surfactant to the water when you clean the radiator to help with dissolving the crud.

Tell me about it! 🤪🤪🤪🤪 I’m in Connecticut & every year when we plowed before planting corn 🌽! The farm owners nephew & myself would pick the fields clean! Every f cking year! Next spring run over it with the plow again & have the same if not more rocks 🪨 to pick again! Thank god the nephew was smart, went to Cobillskill ag college in upstate New York! When he began running the show, we started no tilling! Still had plenty of rocks 🪨 come up, but only about 10 buckets worth, instead of 100s of buckets worth! Hand picked by both of us with the old IH 1066 rolling along in 2nd low, while ghost 👻 riding & us in front doing the picking!!! Connecticut potatoes 🥔 🪨🪨🪨! 50 year old radiators do not work, I’ve seen the farm owners do it over & over! You cannot get them to cool anymore!!! If it was a head gasket, you would normally find h20 in the oil! Put a pressure tester on top of radiator & run it! If it builds a bunch of pressure, than you probably have a gasket issue! More than likely it’s the 50+ year old radiator!

That water didn't look very green. Your heating problem might be a lack of coolant to water ratio.

Maand geleden
Midwestdoug36

I think a contributing issue of overheating is running water in your system. Antifreeze/coolant brings down freezing point but also raises boiling point.

Maand geleden
Justin Williams
Justin Williams

Taking the thermostat out will actually make it overheat, it may take longer to heat up, but once it does the water never slows down enough to let off the heat to the radiator.. the thermostat restricts the flow so the rad can do its work.. all that aside, great videos and you all have been in my prayers that you get enough of a harvest and stay in the black!!!

Bob, your story of rock picking takes me back to when i was kid growing up on the dairy farm with my older brother an sister an my folks. Picked stones every spring with a tractor an a old running gear wagon that has metal spokes rubber tires. an 2X10's by 12 planks. used pitch forks to pick them up, than once the wagon was full Dad would take it to our woods an Back into a pile an once of us would pull up the planks an down the rocks went an repeat it couple more times.

In the 1950s, my dad farmed a 40 acre field that the neighbor had farmed for years with mules. The first year, he ruined at least two tires on the Farmall Super H with old mesquite stumps that the farmer just left in the field, and the mules stepped over. My job was to walk that field with a little red wagon, picking up these loose mesquite stumps. Different areas, but similar problems.

Serious flashbacks at the mention of rock picking😬😬. Stone picking is as old as farming, in Ireland 🇮🇪 are 5,000 year old fields (Céide Fields) surrounded by stone walls! How the conditions improve for you guys. Nice job on the JD, I’d say it owes you nothing!

I'm up in a glacier mountain range which has the exact same issues. dad had four kids. So it was two big red trikes. the youngest got to drive them cause they were weaker and the two oldest were on separate teams. each had a box on the rear rack. spread the trikes out 10feet away and pick fill the box till them trikes started to get pretty light on the front end than the youngest kid went from driving the trike to sitting on the little rack on the front wheel till you found a big rock to replace the "live counter weight" LOL

Maand geleden
Welker Farms
Welker Farms

I personally haven't heard about this but I do know if crops are in such poor condition that it can be more cost effective to destroy the crop and collect insurance than to attempt a harvest. It all boils down to trying to make a profit, whatever at the end of the day brings home more is typically the direction the farmer will take.
